Patterned Wood Floors by Carlisle

For centuries, patterned wood floors have defined some of the world’s most remarkable interiors — from European estates to today’s most thoughtfully designed homes. The layout of a floor does more than cover a surface;
it shapes the entire atmosphere of a space.

Movement,
Rhythm, and
Architectural Distinction.

At Carlisle, wide plank flooring is our signature, celebrated for its calm, seamless beauty. When crafted into patterns, those same boards become something more architectural — introducing rhythm, geometry, and visual movement beneath your feet.
Chevron draws the eye with sharp precision.
Herringbone layers classic rhythm and energy.
Versailles panels echo historic craftsmanship.
Each pattern brings its own personality, yet all share the same Carlisle standard: precision milling, dimensional accuracy, and enduring beauty.

Why Choose a Patterned Wood Floor

The most considered interiors have always included a patterned floor. Today’s designers return to them for the same reason: they create spaces that feel curated rather than conventional.

Patterned layouts can:

01
Create a dramatic first impression in entryways
02
Define formal dining rooms and entertaining spaces
03
Add architectural interest to primary suites
04
Elevate lobbies and shared spaces in luxury residences

How Wide Planks Transform
Patterned Floors

Traditional patterned floors often used narrow boards, which can feel visually dense and busy in today’s cleaner, more minimal interiors.

Wide planks change that dynamic.

By reducing the number of seams and lines, they allow the natural grain of the wood to remain prominent, creating floors that feel calmer, more architectural, and more aligned with modern design principles and contemporary commercial spaces.
Reduce visual clutter
Emphasize the natural character of the wood
Create a sense of scale and openness
Reinforce craftsmanship and authenticity

Carlisle patterns are crafted with the same care and precision as our traditional plank floors, ensuring that pattern enhances the natural beauty of the wood rather than competing with it.

Plank

The classic Carlisle floor — wide boards flowing seamlessly to showcase the natural beauty of the wood.

Wide boards installed in straight, parallel rows to showcase the full length and grain of the wood

Herringbone

A timeless zig-zag pattern that introduces movement and texture while remaining elegant and refined.

Rectangular boards laid at 90° to each other in a broken zigzag, named for the skeletal pattern of a herring fish

Chevron

Boards cut at precise angles meet to form a continuous “V,” creating symmetry and visual direction.

Boards cut at matching angles meet to form a continuous V-shape, creating a strong sense of direction and movement

Versailles

An iconic panel design inspired by historic European estates. Interwoven geometric elements create depth and artistry across the floor plane.

A timeless zig-zag that introduces movement and texture while remaining elegant and refined. Wide planks keep natural grain visible — giving herringbone a calmer, more architectural presence than narrow-strip versions ever can.

Designed With Architectural Intent

Patterned floors require thoughtful planning. Proportion, room size, light, and traffic flow all influence the final result.

Our team works closely with architects, designers, and builders to refine:
Board width and scale relative to the room
Direction of natural light
Pattern transitions between spaces
Alignment with architectural elements
This attention to detail ensures the floor supports the design rather than competing with it.

Perfectly Matched Plank and Pattern

Designers often combine plank flooring with patterned areas like herringbone or chevron. Historically, matching those formats in a pre-finished floor was nearly impossible, often requiring the entire floor to be site finished.

Carlisle solves this by producing plank and patterned components in the same color run, ensuring tone and finish match perfectly across every format and creating seamless transitions throughout the home.

Have Questions?
Start Here.

Can patterned floors be engineered or solid?

Yes. Carlisle patterns can be crafted in both engineered and solid constructions depending on the environment. Our engineered option features a 4mm wear layer — the same center-cut American hardwood used in our solid planks — over a marine-grade Baltic birch core. It’s ideal for radiant heat, below-grade installations, and any space where dimensional stability matters.

Are patterned floors more difficult to install?

Patterned layouts require careful planning and precision installation. Our milling accuracy ensures boards align perfectly during installation.

Can patterns transition to plank flooring?

Yes. Many projects combine plank flooring in open areas with patterned layouts in entryways or feature spaces.

What species work best for patterns?

White Oak is the most common choice, though Walnut, Hickory, and other species can also be used.
