While standard commercial flooring is made up of fairly narrow strips of hardwood – 3″ wide at most – the floorboards in wide plank Walnut hardwood flooring may run as wide as 8″ to 10″, or even up to 16″. The visual difference between standard and wide plank flooring is immense. Commercial flooring may have hundreds of seams between floorboards in an average-size room, creating a chopped-up feel and a cluttered or busy look. Wide plank Walnut hardwood flooring, on the other hand, will have far fewer seams and a much cleaner, more elegant appearance. Rift and quartersawn Walnut floorboards are cut at a 90-degree angle from the center of the tree to produce very straight grain that runs the entire length of the board.
Engineered floors are designed to better withstand big changes in moisture, humidity and temperature such as you would find in basements, in radiant heating systems and in floors installed over concrete slabs. An engineered floor is made by gluing a veneer of hardwood to multiple layers of backing material – plywood or fiberboard. This construction prevents the floorboards from expanding and contracting as the ambient environment changes. Engineered Walnut floors are not appropriate for locations where relative humidity may drop below 30%.
A prefinished floor is one that is sanded, stained and sealed before it is delivered for installation. With a prefinished floor, homeowners can avoid the mess of sanding, which sends sawdust flying everywhere, as well as the smell and inconvenience of staining and sealing the floor on site.
Walnut hardwood flooring can be cleaned with a simple mixture of vinegar (1 or 2 ounces) and water (2 gallons). The natural acidity of vinegar helps to loosen dirt and contaminants, and the solution is safe for the environment.
Walnut floors are among the softer hardwoods, with a Janka hardness rating of 1010. While it may scratch or ding a little more easily, Walnut hardwood flooring is nevertheless highly resilient and will last for many years with proper care.
American and Black Walnut floors are the same thing – they are both made from American Black Walnut hardwood, as opposed to Brazilian Walnut or European Walnut timbers.
